Nevertheless, what I see is Dick Cavett's unbounded charisma. (He rolled three sixes on that one.) Matthews is clearly playing with him, and Cavett is seemingly more than willing to play along.

So what's wrong with that. The interview is all about a crazy mix of pop culture and politics, of which I am sure Cavett approves.

Plus, this interview makes me smile, which is always a good thing, don't you think?

I think it was one of Cavett's ways of telling Tweety that he interrupted him too much. Tweety will never learn to shut up and let his guests talk. I love Cavett's dry humor.

It is also refreshing to watch the PBS/Cavett show on Watergate and see all those clowns try to lie their way out of the break-in situation AND to see Walter Cronkite step in and bring the Watergate issue to the public's attention because the public believed that if Walter Cronkite believed it, it must be true. Oh, to have another Cronkite or two in today's newsrooms.

Matthews was throughout respectful.

How can anybody credibly say that Matthews was interrupting here?

It is a great interview, and both Cavett and Matthews were in tune.

Chris life history has a lot of liberal cred early on, but he lost me when he cheer-leaded the 2003 Iraq Invasion; "We are all neocons now" indeed!

He was for the Invasion, for a few fucking years, before he was against it.

Cavett is a national treasure and it took me 24 hours to realize his "well, I let my guests talk" comment could be interpreted as a dig on Chris, who basically doesn't let his guests talk.

And Dick guested the great Frank Zappa at least twice in the early 70's.

I also recall Dick and Robin Williams riffing off Shakespeare quotes together. Intellectual improv that was great.

Comedian, author and talk show icon Dick Cavett drops by Gilbert's New York City apartment to sip Merlot and share personal memories of Groucho Marx, Johnny Carson and John Lennon, among others. Dick also talks about the time a guest dropped dead on his set (yes, it actually happened) AND favors Gilbert with some dead-on impersonations of his favorite obscure character actors!
