And is probably the child of hippie parents who were into Ayurvedic herbal medicine.
Yep - Rachel and Tulsi are spot on in insisting that there has to be a political strategy to go along with the military strategy. Militarily, it's easy to blow things up and defeat the bad guys, but without a political strategy we fail at the consequent nation building and reconstruction. A political strategy must be worked out that is good for all the people of Iraq, just as we need political and economic solutions at home that work for ALL the people. But hey - creating such solutions and implementing them, has never been the forté of the GOP lawmakers who now run congress.
Those who have been veterans in our recent wars in the Middle East, and have seen first hand the lack of clear political objectives and strategy, and the desperate need for them, are in a unique and important position to educate the rest of us. I believe that our last president, W, may have said (or at least I can well imagine him saying), "Heck - we're just making this up as we go along!"
Nation building at home and abroad - but especially here at home! Should be our new political mantra. My heartfelt best wishes go out to this new young veterans' caucus! May they not only inject new life into the desperately needed political debates about US military involvement in the Middle East, but may they also get us to come to our senses and think twice - or maybe even three or four times, at least - about going in there in the first place.
