He didn't. He simply created a "have-his-cake-and-eat-it-too" situation. He doesn't counter the argument that blackholes erase information. he simply creates his own cheat around it. It's the Captain Kirk solution You don't actually "beat" the test, you rig the game.

His answer doesn't undermine the argument that he is wrong about blackholes maintaining information. Which is to say, I think the program wasn't tough enough on Hawking's finally conclusion to all this.
