In other words, his plan is to do nothing and provide no leadership at all. Sounds like he shares his father's disdain for "the vision thing."

(4,407 posts)I submit to you that Jeb, like his brother, need to appear stupid because the republican base doesn't trust people who sound smart - it makes them (the base) feel like someone's putting one over on them. My impression of all the repub candidates is that they are all doing this. Republicans value people who sound stupid - to us at least - but seem to come up with solutions "from their gut."

(17,187 posts)Very popular among the more fanatical sci-fi crowd. The (wholly innacurate) proposition that technology always comes riding in on a white horse when all is lost.
When you think of it, it is totally compatible with both the Hidden Hand of the market and supply-side economics. It's a unified faith.

(9,387 posts)Ultimately, theres going to be a person in a garage somewhere thats going to come up with a disruptive technology thats going to solve these problems, and I think markets need to be respected in this regard," he said.
.....
So, basically, we're just sitting around waiting for someone in a garage somewhere to fix all of this while, locally, we pray Miami Beach isn't swallowed by the sea.
Sure, a lot of companies got their start in garages: Apple, Microsoft, and Hewlett Packard in the tech sector, plus Disney, Barbie, and Nike.
Of course, all of those companies started with the ultimate aim of making money, not solving major world problems. Jeb seems to think the the person who fixes climate change will end up making lots and lots of money. Granted, that's a fairly common Republican way of thinking.
However, because of today's real-estate climate, we wonder if this theoretical hero could even afford a place with a garage (unless this person were living in a garage) and if he/she has enough free time while not working to pay off student debt to devote to world-saving extracurriculars. We can only hope that our garage savior does. Please, person in a garage, save us. You're our only hope.
Meanwhile, quite a few people are looking to disrupt this guy's dark money-greased hunt for White House power.

(43,128 posts)is the way of governing when you can't have a decisive majority.
GHWB did this in 1992, sounding strident and shrill in the closing weeks
of the campaign. It has been argued by some that he didn't campaign
very hard and threw the election the other way.
This is such a moment.

(4,291 posts)James Ellis, I know your mommy didn't want to waste her "beautiful mind" about trivial things, such as body bags and death, so this probably never came up over the dinner table. So here goes:
Back to the Future Didn't. Really. Happen.
Marty McFly, Doctor Emmett Brown, even Biff Tanner were all made up characters. Nobody converted a DeLaurean into a time machine in a garage. It's all make-believe.
I know this is hard to swallow, but have a grown-up -- other than your mommy -- explain this to you in words you can understand.
OK?
Talk about the definitive "child left behind"!

How about allocating budget resources to private and public sector for partnerships to develop new technology or to efficiently use the technologies we have.
How about the fact that China and European countries are so far ahead of the US in solar technology we should be ashamed.

A disruptive technology would have to produce as a product something that reduces CO2 in the air or ceases creating more of it.

(12,471 posts)OMFG, what an idiot. He also wants people to work more hours. Hows about CONGRESS working more hours? They get the entire month of August off. I would like to have an entire month off paid, as my friends in Europe get.
What, he thinks that because a couple of bright guys came up with the Apple computer in their garage, that someone is gonna do it again?
Fat chance. Those guys had help from stuff like NASA, whose research into miniaturization for the space program gave them the integrated circuits that they needed to make that home computer. And that's only one thing.
What a maroon!

It's basically the technological solutions version of "log cabinizing." All of the worlds great leaders will ultimately come from log cabins, like Abe Lincoln. But then again, WHO NEEDS great leaders, when all of the worlds problems will be solved not by political action, but buy GIZMOS that were tinkered together by eccentric genius' in their garages.

(4,297 posts)You can see how the world appears to them. In a way, it's not all their fault. The rest of us should not fall for their aristocratic pontificating as much as we do. They think they have higher skills. Actually, as somebody once said, what they have is "hire" skills (when they bother to use them): just hire somebody else to make things nice again for them. Always just for them. The rest of us are not real to them.
