As high school sophomore, I canvassed neighborhoods in Portland, and worked at a couple of rallies where he spoke. He was an inspired man who fought with Johnson over the creeping commitment to the Vietnam War. Gene McCarthy won the Oregon primary. Kennedy won California a week later, but was murdered while leaving the hotel after his victory speech.

Had he lived, he probably would have led a united Democratic Party to a victory over Nixon. Instead we had the disaster of the Chicago convention, a Humphrey loss, and seven more years of war with 50,000 lost American lives.
