Richland Country Sheriff Leon Lott reluctantly fired the officer responsible for slamming a student to the ground in class, but then went on to defend his use of force. Then came the victim-blaming. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"The school resource officer who was caught on camera violently flipping a South Carolina high school student at her desk has been fired, authorities announced Wednesday.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said an internal investigation over the Monday incident at Spring Valley High School in Columbia focused on whether Senior Deputy Ben Fields had violated the department's policies.
He said at a news conference that the department looked at cellphone videos taken from the classroom and interviews with witnesses, and concluded that the maneuvers he used in the confrontation were "not acceptable.*

Why not have a school policy that cell phones are not allowed in the classroom? And then if rule is violated there are penalties, such as detention and then possibly suspension.
There is no justification for using violence in a school setting. This only teaches children to become violent.
When I attended school, they recommended to parents to students not be allowed to watch more than one hour of TV per evening. They obviously can't enforce what happens after school hours, yet they made a convincing argument to parents and most parents enforced their recommendations.
The policeman is not the only problem. The teacher and administrator siad they thought the guy acted appropriately. So they are probably more guilty than the policeman in breaching their responsibilities of providing a good education. A teacher/instructor has to gain the trust and respect of the student. You can not educate a student via violence.

(7,875 posts)That's the same exact clip I've been sending to dildos on Twitter who are using the 'bitch wouldn't listen' defense to excuse the cop's behaviour.

(15,229 posts)the continued employment of the multiple offender, it is arguable that his dereliction was a worse offence than those of his protege, and is certainly the root cause of the violent assault on the child.
Also, without the need for further information, you had to wonder about the teacher. Indeed, as Geronimo indicated, both she and the Administrator condoned the assault.
A quote of the Sheriff on NBC News : '... His actions were something that if he had to do it over again, he probably would have done it different."
So, it seems that whether he would have done it differently 'if he had to do it over again', is a matter of conjecture, the implication being that Fields' thought processes are random in nature, rather than reasoned, in the view of the Sheriff. Although the Sheriff's own remarks seem to suggest he's confused about the issue, himself. Perhaps, he is always baffled by his deputies' behaviour.
