I think he genuinely, at the time with Tapper, didn't know who Duke was and didn't want to jump the gun and denounce a person until he knew who it was.

Even if he knew Duke 17 years ago, there's tons of people I don't remember from 17 years ago.

There are tons of things to hit Trump on, like him acting like his earpiece didn't work or how he grifts people; I don't think Duke is one of them.
