Douglas Brinkley: Cronkite's tarnished legacy

CNN "Reliable Sources": David Brinkley talks with Howard Kurtz about his revealing new book on legendary newsman Walter Cronkite. (Transcript)

The title of the book is simply "Cronkite". Brinkley had a more in depth, hour long interview on the C-SPAN program "Q&A" (transcript):

Since he was anti-Vietnam war, and the military industrial complex had been taking over the press; he had to go.

Of course he has to be discredited now. It's unacceptable to be against war and be employed by the press.

So tarnished that the MSM now has an excuse for being bought and paid for....see they did it even back then....or so this guy says. and he got it from the most unethical people around...those that worked for Johnson...and we are to believe them?
Cronkite had integrity...today's media has none at all.

winner of the Enron Prize for Distinguished Public Service.

When it comes to integrity, it's hard to top James Baker and Enron.

Congressional Hearing Argument On November 18, 2011, Rep. Don Young got into an argument during a Congressional hearing with Brinkley, over the idea of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Reports say that during Brinkley’s testimony Young was not present in the room, yet still continued to respond to the speech Brinkley had made. Young not only referred to Brinkley’s argument as “garbage”, but also addressed Brinkley as “Dr. Rice.” In return, Brinkley made disparaging remarks about Young's education, stating, "I know you went to Yuba College and couldn't graduate." For continually interrupting Young and the committee chairman, he was threatened with removal from the hearing. Young did shout at the Rice University history professor to demand “I’ll say anything I want to say! You just be quiet!”.[15]

I gotta admire a guy who tells a Republican to go fuck himself, basically...as for Cronkite, when Walter was telling us that JFK had died, this kid was still in diapers. It's a third-party account. It'll sink or swim on its merits. The media will always focus on the most controversial aspect of a book to create buzz--I haven't heard enough about this tome to know if this is just one page of drama or the tone of the thing.

As a kid, although I didn't root for Ernie's best-known team (he called games for my team but before I was born), I have fond memories of listening to him (and Ray Lane) on WJR from a farmhouse in southwestern Ontario.

he might as well have spit on the American flag in Michigan. NOBODY supported that and man were people pissed. So needless to say, Ernie had the last word on that.

Never forget that one..that was talked about more in Michigan than JFK's assassination.

Walter Cronkite was a trusted, intelligent reporter. Much better then the crap that is on the air today.

I entered his name into DU and find no such indication. In fact, another poster shared a video of him criticizing a Republican member of congress during a hearing. Brinkley as far as i know about him is a normally reliable historian is he not?

(Addendum) I looked up the Baker Institute on Wikipedia. the founder is Edward Djerejian, the Clinton-nominated ambassador to Israel. Madeleine Albright serves on the institute's bipartisan board of directors.

He really went after the Bush administration for their pitiful, disgraceful handling of the Hurricane
Katrina disaster.

He was also a major critic of BP during the Gulf Oil spill. Called them criminals, which of course they are.
