President-elect Kennedy decided to appoint Robert McNamara his Secretary of Defense.
Pretty big decision. They'd never met. McNamara months before was made the first president of Ford outside the Ford family.
So McNamara was facing a huge loss by accepting, but they were patriotic times when a president asks.
McNamara told Kennedy it was a bad idea. He didn't know anything about running the military.
Kennedy responded, they don't have school for presidents, either.
McNamara said that took the wind out of his opposition and he accepted.
