(110,913 posts)Toms are usually separated from cats at and after the birth of kittens because they've been known to kill the kittens, and it doesn't matter if they're the sire. No one knows why this is the case, but it could be anything from trying to bring the female into heat again more quickly or simply confusion, seeing the squirming little kittens as prey.
However, I can tell you from experience that female cats love being stroked during the birthing process. One cat even tried to have her kittens in my lap.

Male cats can be very attentive toward kittens, too. I've seen kittens try to "nurse" off their dad, who wasn't bothered by it at all (they were just sucking on his fur).

It does depend on the cat. Just reporting what has been seen with cats for a very long time.

What beautiful babies.
One of our unfortunately-now-departed cats was a total sweetie. We got a pairof 8 week old kittens when he was not quite 3. They took to him immediately, and in very short order, they were snuggle buddies.

(9,777 posts)I love cats and those are precious pictures. But it's completely irresponsible not to spay and neuter your pets. There are so many homeless cats who deserve a home. Adding to the existing cat population is wrong.
