Obama: There will be other days for politics
Updated 10:56 a.m. EST
President Obama paid tribute to the victims of today's Colorado shooting tragedy and asked for Americans to pray for the people of the Denver suburb where the shooting spree happened.
Obama's remarks came in Florida where he was scheduled to speak at a campaign event. But Obama spoke only briefly and centered his comments on the tragedy.
"There are going to be other days for politics," Obama said. "This is a day for prayer and reflection."

President Obama: 'Such Violence, Such Evil is Senseless; It's Beyond Reason'
11:14 am
July 20, 2012
In a speech from Fort Myers, Fla., President Obama said today was "a day for prayer and reflection."
The President cancelled a planned campaign event and instead addressed the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. He asked those gathered to pause for a moment of silence to remember the victims.
"Even as we learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings like this," Obama said. "Such violence, such evil is senseless; it's beyond reason."
And while we may never understand why something like this happens, what we know, he said, is "what makes life worth living."
"The people we lost in Aurora, loved and they were loved. They were mothers and fathers, they were husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors. They had hope for the future ... and dreams that were not yet fulfilled," Obama said.

(23,006 posts)Sad faces are easy, facile remarks not difficult at all - action, that's what this president doesn't do. Did he do anything after the Gabby Giffords incident to prevent future recurrences, no! Did he even fucking try - hell no. I have no respect for easy tears, any actor can do that. Pass a law outlawing large magazine, pass a lot disallowing automatic guns/rifles, pass a law outlawing purchasing more than a couple of guns at a time or buying massive quantities of ammuniction. Do something good rather than spout platitudes. I'm sick of empty gestures as innocents continue to die.

The crowd came for a pep rally and applauded several times when Obama didn't intend to have applause lines.

(30,885 posts)...he did the right thing. He's right. Today is not a day for stump speeches. I don;t have kids. But I do trust the sincerity of the thought of either of his daughters facing harm as a moment of terror. I can't imagine. I can intellectualize it all day, but without kids of my own, I can't imagine.

Could this punk be a right wing gun loving nut that took rush too serious?

(276 posts)He's an outstanding actor, and he delivers his lines flawlessly.
The line "There are going to be other days for politics" is a slick way of deflecting attention from the firearms issue that this tragedy, once again, SHOULD raise to the fore.
It's slicker than "It would be too easy to blame this on guns", or "Now is not the time to play the blame game".
Corporations make big money from saturating American society with deadly weapons, and this is one obvious and all too recurrent consequence.
But this is unmentionable from a President who is firmly in their pocket.
humbled_opinion
(4,423 posts)but gun control is not a popular political position because of the billions that NRA invests in politicians, and the destruction of those that dare utter their opposition to being killed by assault rifles.
Maybe if Obama had a nice lead in the polls and the American electorate was not being poisoned by Talk Radio and Faux news he might have addressed it.

(23,006 posts)would applaud absolutely anything Obama does, regardless of how center to right wing the actions. Cult of personality, in full swing here. I'll vote for him, absolutely for sure, as he's better than the alternative. but I do not delude myself that he's actually on the side of the working class, because that's not really true.
