True, I never would have thought about a Special Counsel taking the heat off of Republicans. nt Quixote1818 May 2017 #2

The heat is off them. The witnesses won't be testifying in public hearings. The Congress can get back to working on taking away health care and giving it in a yuge tax cut package to their rich friends and themselves.

But the Congress now is not like the Republican politicians back in Watergate or the Iran Contra. Most of them can't be trusted. Many of them would NEVER have been fair, and even in the face of evidence, would never have recommended charges or impeachment or anything. Look at how they excused Sessions lying under oath about Russian communications. Look at what they did in response to Sessions reneging on his promise to recuse himself: nothing. Listen to Ryan and cohorts laughing about Trump being paid by Putin and how they won't leak that because they are "family." (BTW, I think Ryan's use of "family" for the Repubs came directly from Trump; that's Trump's view, and I'd bet you money he used it when speaking with Ryan: "we're family, now.&quot

Further, look at Nunes' actions, as head of the House Intel Committee. Unethical behavior, at the least. And what was done about it? Nothing. Until, finally, Nunes removed himself as chair of that committee.

Would the Senate have been better? Maybe. But they sure were dragging their feet. And Lindsay Graham, who started out being at least somewhat impartial and factual, ended up saying that Trump firing Comey wasn't obstruction of justice, that it was justified because of the handling of Clinton's emails. Same ol' Republican meme. They seemed to be circling the wagons.

So a Special Counsel was necessary. But it will take the heat off Republicans and let them cont. pursuing their agenda.
