Related: About this forumCharles Kraphammer Accidentally Speaks The Truth. Single Payer in Seven Years.
Despite his pathological hatred for Obama, as well as all things liberal since he saw the light and became a conservative...Charles Krauthammer sometimes speaks the truth. Usually by mistake, but whatever.
Here he muses that we are 'at the midpoint,' and will have a (logical and simple) single payer healthcare system within seven years. That's the truth part. The false part is where he continuously refers to 'Obamacare,' when it should rightfully be called Republican Care, or Romneycare, or Heritage Foundation Care, because the healthcare 'plan' that Obama and the Democrats implemented in 2009 was actually written by the conservative Heritage Foundation in 1993 as a 'free market' alternative to Hillarycare. It's NOT a LIBERAL healthcare plan...it's a moderate conservative plan.
Nevertheless, he's right. What happened was that 'Obamacare' was implemented, and it was a hell of a lot better than nothing. Nevertheless, it had/has major problems with it, and the Democrats got crushed in subsequent elections because of it. Now the Republicans are finally in charge, and they're going to try to take it away, and replace it with a bucket full of diarrhea shot straight from satan's asshole. They too will then get crushed in the next elections, and after having tried a moderate conservative healthcare plan, followed by a predatory 'feed the poor to the rich' nightmare, the people will finally realize that single payer works very well for EVERY OTHER F-ING COUNTRY ON EARTH, and demand it.
Unfortunately, it means things might have to get worse before they get better. I hope not.

(40,416 posts)And a physician (a psychiatrist). He became a paraplegic in a diving accident during his undergraduate education. He went on to complete an MD at Harvard in a wheelchair.
I don't often agree with Dr. Krauthammer, but I sometimes have to be in awe of his abilities and his intelligence, even when he's wrong. However, in this case he is not wrong. He is like many of the former conservative pundits, realizing that the GOP is burying themselves. Witness David Frum (who was on board with us during Dubya's term) and David Brooks (who very often agrees with Mark Shields on PBS Fridays).
The utter horror comes from Bill Kristol, who has never once been correct about anything. The question is, does one want to agree with him now knowing his very sad record?
Then one thinks of stopped clocks.
My best to you all.

(5,954 posts)(Actually, I think he qualifies as a low quadriplegic, not a paraplegic. C4-C3 injury? Has only partial control of his hands, and also looks like he's shoulder-breathing most of the time.)
I have a love/hate relationship with him because he IS very intelligent and articulate, but has become less rational and more dogmatic in his old age. In the 1980s I thought he was rational, except for his attitudes towards the middle east. He pretty much went off the deep end (no pun intended) when he joined Fox. I don't think Krauthammer has made an accurate prediction since 2000, but they like to keep him around because he's one of the few conservative pundits left who doesn't have puffed credentials (like Gorka, for instance).

Also, I notice that he's not looking so good these days. Maybe it's just age. (He's 67.)

(11,982 posts)To the extent it is failing, it is largely failing because the Republicans sabotaged it. By having states opt out of Medicaid expansion. By playing games with promised reimbursements. By creating uncertainties and throwing up roadblocks wherever they could.
But because of that sabotage, Obamacare may very well fail, whether the Republicans succeed in passing a bill this year or not, and indeed there may be a groundswell for single payer within 7 years as Krauthammer says.
So while it may be a tough 7 years between now and then, maybe the Republicans actually did something good here, even if inadvertently.

(5,954 posts)Despite what Krauthammer said here, the REAL irony is that Obamacare is a moderate conservative plan which they would have LOVED to take credit for, but when it was Obama who actually implemented it they had to pretend it was awful, and do everything they could to destroy it.
