I can report that there is no unhappier creature in the universe than a cat on a diet.
She wasn't hugely overweight, so a gentle diet got her back to normal within a year. To hear her tell it, it was far from gentle.

(3,847 posts)Given little fido Doritos as a snack or a treat is insane. Seeing these animals in that state should be considered animal abuse.

(111,245 posts)to whichever species of furry friend you have. Unless a cat or dog demonstrates an allergy to something in it, they will do fine on most commercial pet foods.
Early canned cat foods weren't good for indoor cats who didn't hunt because they didn't understand that heat destroys taurine, an amino acid cats need a lot of. The research has been done and they've corrected the problem.
My own cats wanted nothing but kibble and rebelled when they were out of Purina and I had to get a more expensive brand. They've all lived into their teens and early 20s.
