In Spanish it denotes much more, and undelying contempt for a persons nastiness, meaness, much more than that layers of undertones. Note: in Spanish New Mexico, the word gringo is rarely used, and when it's used it's usually is used to describe the bigoted rascists Christian kkkwhitefolkkrepublikkkans--not say, and never said about or to nice white folk, also we almost never refer to whitefolk as white.. we'll say Anglo for anglo-saxon ( for me it's that Malcolm X premise about ) My son whose grandmother is an English immigrant...ok with those kkkfolks cuz she's Enlglish and she's got that very strong English accent. We know Mexican or Spanish accent not so good, English accent from England..just wonderful!
So, my son and I have about the same debate everytime he comes to visit when we're discussing kkking latest gaffe ..If by chance, I happen to say gringo when talking about fascist trumpf and his cult following and the republikkkans [who are still in civil war mode whereby we kick their kkk ass here in New Mexico, and when I say say WE, I mean the thousands of Hispanos.., Spanish New Mexicans, including my great-great grandfather, that fought on the Union side [thank god] against slavery] he'll say, well mom not all white folk are bad , nope I say; he'll say, millions voted for Obama or he wouldn't have won twice, yup I say ....but I say. well white dems and independents All turned and voted for trumpf or opted not to vote at all. ...I'll say, I'll bet your grand - mama voted for him because in the end all whitefolk are rascists and will protect that white privilege lie. (I'm thinking when did I turn into my very liberal progressive give them hel l grandfather, when did I become la chicana, the rebel maybe when I was six and punched an anglokid bully for caling me a dirty Fuckin Mexican. At six yrs old, I knew: one, I wasn't dirtty,he the boy was filthy with lice in had, and surely I was not fucking dirty; two, I'm not have never been Mexican, heard the word Mexican, we, the Spanish community in New Mexico while not negating our mestizoness, we were Spain for say 4 centuries or years, we came as Spanish pilgrims, long before the English pilgrims arrived on that rock, three we're still here we didn t move, the border moved, and four, we never refer to ourselves as Mexicans because We were only under Mexican rule for less than 25 yrs then Americans. We don' t have or ever owned a Mexican flag, we never celebrate cinco de mayo or Mexican independence from Spain...Mexico is not our country of origin, and have never considered it to be our nationality, however that is not to dismiss our Mexican compardres, or Mexican immigrants and theyre pride in their country and that they left to have a better life here in America, like your people did. We, Spanish New Mexicans were once immigrants in a strange land. And, when elfeogringo came out and said Mexicans are rapists and criminals, well he said it to all of us because the border moved, we didn t; we respect our Mexican vecinos, neighbor's, here and across the border.
Frankly, I told my son, I just wanted to leave this a better world for you and my grandchildren, a kind, just place where all people have better life ...that's all, I just thought we were done battling this shit, issues of the past, rascim bigotry and here it is again. What was shocking, I said to my son that on November 8...I hadnt realize that there were so many resists in our country, I was stunned that my America was that racists, that my America had so many people didn t care about us, people of color ( and by the way, Americans wto identify as Mexicans, hispanicn Latinos Spanish come in all skin tones, eye color, hair color and so on.) that they voted to do us harm. I, we have always known about the bigotry of our Nation, yet this many fellow Americans..neighbors, colleagues, friends voted for a bigot, now in 2017, it is a journey backwards to 1950, 1960. And for people of color it wasnot a pleasant experience, well at least it's not back to slavery and indigenous genocide...that of course was hel l for those who experiened that abuse. Someone wrote in a du thread that wrong is the new norm, no wrong is wrong and this is wrong for all Americans.
