when I was a kid and CD's were the in thing, my dad still kept a vinyl collection- I think he still has every herb alpert album in existence.

(5,376 posts)I'd like to dedicate this to my late sister Margaret, a Herb Alpert fan who left me far too early in a tragic vehicle accident. I'll always miss you, Maggie--you never failed to make me Rise and taught me how to stay strong.
Blessings, everyone. Make every day count!

(22,031 posts)Although I must add, I prefer his earlier work with the Tijuana Brass to his disco tunes.
When he couldn't get a record deal for his band in the 1960's, he formed his own company, A&M Records which went on to become a hugely successful company. I've always loved that Mr. Alpert continued to play music in spite of his business obligations. In my own modest way, I've tried to emulate that and keep my fingers on the piano keyboard as much as the computer one.
One of the bands he signed early on was Sergio Mendes' Brazil '66. Alpert fell in love and married the lead female vocalist, Lani Hall. She's the woman he's dancing with in the "Rise" video. She had a nice career of her own with a number of album releases. Here's her performance in the title sequence of the James Bond movie, "Never Say Never Again."
Thanks for the memories, Grassy Knoll!

And here's my personal favorite from her solo album, "Sun Down Lady." This song was originally titled, "Muskrat Love" and it was recorded by The Captain and Tennille. Herb Alpert and Lani Hall rewrote the lyrics for her album. Incidentally, Alpert sings backup vocals on this performance.
