A Relic from the First Korean War era...

A few days ago I recieved this via wheeebay -

A 1950 Raytheon (major arms manufacturer - think Patriot and Tomahawk missiles.)

Ordered it weeks ago.

The Korean War kicked off in 1950.

Truman was President.

Joe McCarthy was on a roll.

Now I'm hoping this wasn't an ill omen.

A beautiful piece of living history,

and a reminder.

We listened to newscasts on a radio much like that one. Also, of course, I listened to "The Lone Ranger" and "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon." Thanks for sharing.

For reading!

Korea wasn't as long as Vietnam or Afghanistan, but I believe took us to the brink of all out thermonuclear war.

the tube era radios with the old style rectifiers should survive the electromagnetic pulse during a nuke attack. Any close nukes would probably take out most solid state equipment. I've got quite a few tube radios from the 20's to the 50's but won't be coming with me when I move. Yard sell thursday.

Tube stuff is emp resistant!

Goos luck with the yard sale, sorry to hear you're parting with them!

Should be one at 640khz and another at 1240khz. It's a triangle with a "CD" for Civil Defense in it.

(It might not have the markings, if it's actually a 1950, as CONELRAD was put together in 51.)

Barely.

I have a J.C. Penneys portable transistor with the Conelrad markings.

My Grundig 2440u import has them as well.

Interesting point!
