There was no (publicly-accessible) "internet" during Watergate nor was there any MSNBC where you could just load up a youtube video of a program and watch when you want. You either watched/listened to the hearings "live" (generally on PBS and sometimes the networks, with maybe an overnight repeat) or got the info on the brief national network or PBS news shows and/or radio programs, in addition to the usual print media (which would obviously be delayed at least a day).

Nowadays it's 24/7 "instant" communication of what is going on via multiple media platforms, including the continually updated electronic versions of the print media (i.e., this is worse in that sense).
