--and once you've got a frozen ice layer, the amount of snow on top is immaterial. Something the overconfident in big ass SUV's find out very quickly.

First, you're 100% correct 99.999% of all our "Snow Events" here in Atlanta, Georgia start off as freezing rain or rain that changes over to snow but the ground & roads have yet to drop below freezing & when they do they leave a nasty layer of ice under what looks like powdery snow blowing around. It simply leaves conditions no one in the country can drive on very well especially noy with better equipment like you mentioned! Not too many people are going to shell out the extra cash for good tires that work well in snow & ice that doesn't even take place here in Atlanta, Georgia every year. Or even tire chains.

PLUS, if any of you DUers not from Georgia remember when we Georgians in January of 2014 became the laughing stock of the entire nation when "SNOWMAGEDDON 2014" completely shut down most of the state & all the Atlanta Metropolitan area after a MASSIVE 2 INCHES OF SNOW FELL during the day while everyone was at work & kids were at scholl? And to no one's surprise our GOP Governor & his cronies clearly ignored the warnings, THE SCIENCE, until it was too late! So, by the time the state of Georgia begins to warn people to get off the roads everyone was still at work & school...And Georgia might have had a few sand trucks tops & at that point they were useless. Then I guess everyone tried to leave work & school at the same time packing the interstates, highways & side roads until the ATL was one big cluster fuck of a traffic jam! Thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of cars were simply abandonned, others slept in their cars thinking it would eventually free up but most vehicles remained for days as the temperature plummeted freezing all the vehicles in place...People said it looked like a scene out of the Walking Dead, I'm not sure I've never watched it but it was pure insanity! There was fault to go around but clearly, the Republican Governor Nathan Deal (Voted Most Corrupt US Congressman while a rep from Georgia) blew it by not taking the science seriously & had his mini "Katrina Moment"! The really insane part was there were elementary school kids that did not make it home for 2-3 days!!

...However, this year has been unique in a few ways especially when the Republican Puppet Masters within the Chamber of Commerce almost certainly put the heel of their boot on the necks of both the Republican Governor & their bought & paid for GOP DOMINATED state legislature & forced them to invest in the proper infrastructure to keep the major business thoroughfares open at all cost! And the state of Georgia did exactly that & there has been a huge improvement! However, I have to say if it had been just the Democrats calling for such infrastructure preparedness to keep major roads, highways & the Interstate as safe as possible for the sake of human life especially children going & coming to school the Republican-controlled state legislature would've never even considered it! ...We have had 3 different "Snow Events" so far this winter when most years we don't have any, especially the type that have affected the entire Atlanta metropolitan area where 6+million people live including far north of the ATL where a lot of REPUBLICANS live & drive an hour or two into the ATL for work each day. And compared to times past the major roads especially interstates & highways might not have been kept in perfect ice-free conditions like up north but they were leaps & bounds in better condition than times before.

OH YEAH! I'm not just saying this because it is obvious I know we Southerners have no room to talk but this is very true...Sometimes many of the worst wrecks on the interstates in the ATL during one of our "Snow Events" are people from up north with far too much confidence or should I say arrogance & will drive like it is 75 degrees & dry on a clear day blowing their horn at everyone else crawling along at 25mph...And a while after they pass you probably doing the speed limit of 60-70mph you see then smashed int the median wall or the long spin out tracks they left in the road that leads off the road down a long embankment before coming to a rest with nope hope at all of getting their car out until everything melts & drys. And even worse ones where they blow past you & later you see they lost control & went into a grove of trees...Needless to say that was not a pretty sight. I stopped at one of these events to see if anyone need help, the other I saw the out of state tag as he weaved in & out of traffic in front of me before being he was out of my sight & the other a friend told me about. These all happened years apart but 2 of them were drivers from the same state that obviously gets tons of snow annually or should if our climate was not in chaos.

...Having said that, YES, we Southerners

Not only do they have little experience with snow, they don't have the tires for it. I tried to have winter tires (or at least all season tires) put on my car in FL (before I moved) and the guys were like - just wait until you get up there.

So, I drove in a snowstorm with really bad summer tires. I didn't spin out, because I have a lot of winter driving experience. But it was only because I was going so slow! Several other drivers were in the culvert - waiting for tow trucks.

I have a lot of experience with winter driving. I'm not surprised that drivers in the South don't know how to drive in snow and ice. As an aside, when my brother was stationed at Fort Bragg in the middle '60s, he, and other Iowa boys from his unit used to like to go to a vantage point near a hill when it snowed, and watch the North Carolinians slam on the brakes and do donuts down the hill.

What surprised me was that people in Kansas City, Mo. didn't know how to drive in snow. I was there several years ago for work, when it snowed a couple of inches overnight. I called a cab to take me to my appointment, and was told they weren't sure they could get to my hotel in time. (I had called nearly an hour before the meeting.) When they got there and we drove to the meeting, there were very few cars on the road. In Iowa, 2 inches is a dusting.

This tired old bromide about Southerners can't drive in winter
weather gets trotted out each winter. Its not snow, its ice. And
as news reports show over and over when its just ice in the north,
e.g. Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, etc., you see the
drivers spinning out of control. But some people just have to find
things that aren't true so that they can feel superior.

We don't have ice in Iowa.

Yes, people in the North also struggle. Not, however, to the same degree. And cities don't shut down because of a inch or two of snow. I used to listen to KAAY out of Little Rock at night when I was in grade school and junior high. They'd be announcing school closings over 1/2 inch of snow. I knew I'd have to shovel 4 inches the next morning before walking to school. Five miles. Uphill. Both ways.

I spent a lot of time there when my grandmother was living there and even when they got a "dusting" there was panic on the roads. I don't much like driving in snow here in New York, but what shut things down there wouldn't deter me. One issue is that they don't have plows. My cousin moved there and was an RN at a major hospital in Asheville. I asked her what they do when they get real snow and she told me that they wait for it to melt.
