British interests had, of course, controlled Iraqi oil resources through the Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC) - until a nationalist regime nationalized them in 1972. Suffice it to say, they never gave up on the idea of taking the oil back someday.

When our friends in the GOP wonder why the war "didn't pay for itself," there's their answer.
