(65,227 posts)just finished reading about a 71-year-old Polish man who recently completed his THIRD solo trip across the Atlantic --in a freaking kayak!
He did a Southern Atlantic, Middle Atlantic, and finally, North Atlantic crossing. The North Atlantic was the most dangerous, because it gets nastier storms and mountainous waves.
Why do such a thing? He gains nothing from it but satisfaction. He is not well-off, it is a very costly thing to do, and he doesn't make money from it. But he loves doing it.

(7,911 posts)I have found many ways to find satisfaction and enjoyment in doing things I love without betting my life every time I do something enjoyable.
If you believe life has value then you should fight hard to stay alive, not gamble with your one and only life. Anyone who gambles with their life is a fool, no matter what excuse they use to justify it. On the other hand, maybe such behavior is Darwin's way of ridding the species of fools.
