1. Maybe 40 years ago in NYC, there was a guy who looked dead on the sidewalk.

Our family was going back to our car after dinner.

To our sister's credit (she was maybe 12), she stopped, cried, and became hysterical because (like The Awful Truth), people were walking around him, stepping over him, etc. She insisted that our father, a doctor, do something -- at least discover if that man was still alive. Reluctantly, our father bent over, perceived some breathing, advised us the man was alive, and we went on.

While it was something, I still think about that incident, how disposable that man was. Although realistically, our father wasn't going to pick up that man, call a cop or something, and rehabilitate him, I wish more was done.
