(62,406 posts)with countries we think we can knock the stuffing out of in a day or two - I was able to pick out countries easily.
Having been around since the Korean "conflict" and hearing a lot of tales of WWII, awareness of Asia came along with the various wars we started or participated in over there.
I will disagree with the guy who said they would do better on a map of Europe. Bet there are many countries they couldn't guess in Europe also.
Can't imagine how badly Americans would do on Africa or South America either.

(30,733 posts)I did very well, but after I watched it I STILL looked at a map of Asia, just to be sure.
I have trouble with the Middle Eastern countries.

(38,414 posts)Not an easy job..Oh, would you like some old lesson plans?..Most of the students wanted to learn the locations. But it wasn't easy because of materials, what to cover in a year. Also national vs international geography, vs all other aspects of the subject. Such as map reading, local locations. climate, types of geography like volcanos, rivers, streams, oceans. etc. I did a good job. (I think) Teaching geography was a while ago. They took it out of the curriculum at the last school that I taught at. Note: Geography was not required, as U.S.History was. I think it should be required for at least one 5 month course for everyone to graduate high school. Years ago, the gas stations gave away free maps. Now, no one needs to know how to read a map because their "so called smart phone, will tell them how to get there. Pretty sad reflection on the population. But I will also add, that there are many people in the U.S. who do know their geography, certainly as well as people in other countries.
...Unfortunately I do not think that is a majority. Far less..

Got them all correct. Even Singapore. The island nation, just off the southern tip of the Malay peninsula. At the end of 4th grade, my teacher gave me a little globe, since I'd spent most of the year day dreaming and fiddling with the big globe in her class. I've been a geography buff ever since.
