(205,233 posts)And I have been to that part of the world and can identify - I had no trouble understanding anyone in Ireland or Britain, but in Scotland (which is beautiful, BTW) I'd catch some, then lose track for a bit, catch some more, then lose it again, though I know that it's all supposed to be the same language!

(205,233 posts)But I can remember listening to a Scottish guide and only being able to understand parts of what he was saying, hard as I tried.

(25 posts)I spent some years working for he Royal Bank of Scotland - and the Glaswegians (from Glasgow) and the folks from Edinburgh had distinct and different accents. Their accents when hey felt comfortable with the other folks in the room also being from Scotland became amazingly hard to dissect at times.....also make sure you have your meetings early in the day because after the lunchtime pints the cross pond conference calls were event tougher to comprehend.

(102,226 posts)I love British tv, but even some of the cockney English accents are just too much... And I know a tiny bit of Gaelic!

Another funny thing that happened in Scotland was a kid asking me where I was from and I told him Albuquerque. He immediately started talking about Breaking Bad which is funny because even though I live in Albuquerque I hadn't ever seen the show and here is this kid from Scotland who knew all about it.

But it's always funny to see how the "burr" and the "bwyth" throw people.

(205,233 posts)For a lot of us, it's like a foreign language that you're not entirely good at yet - we only catch parts of it. And I'm guessing that James McAvoy is authentic - since he initially appeared in a kilt.

(6,831 posts)My Mother's side of the family is Clan Douglas and we all wear the ancient Douglas grey tartan.
I started laughing the minute McAvoy started talking. But when they said that the plane was "leaving Glasgow's air," I figured they'd be back to English, so I surprised when they "went Welsh," but laughing my arse off the whole time.
