Except when it doesn't? Dude, this is cold and callous. Not even thoughts and prayers. Why protect this person? The court would probably find it to be an accident so why not allow due process? They're really worried about some consequences. 
Is he claiming he has driven on the wrong side of the road in other countries? It's not that common. The steering wheel is on the other side of the vehicle. And if in doubt, just hire a cab instead.
