After all before those two we had buses and other cab services and yet we still don't have self-driving cars for a very good reason.
First is the need to develop the tech then there's the need to make sure the tech can't be hacked and turn the self-driving vehicles into weapons.

If you google 'taxi driver rapist' and 'uber driver rapist' (or 'murderer') you'll see the same kinds of horror stories.
It's not germane to the profitability of the company, nor the wage issues facing Uber drivers.
It's basically like holding addicts over a barrel, because someone else is paying a lot for insulin. It doesn't make sense. They are unrelated.
