(14,173 posts)Bernie is only doing what Obama should have done, as David says. Obama should have fought for single payer, and then negotiated down to a public option. We would now be so much further ahead. I don't think the majority of Sanders supporters actually think there will be a full fledged single payer, all government run, health care system in 4 years if he gets elected. Its about starting the process. and keeping the high ground for as long as possible. First just to get enough Americans excited about supporting that eventual goal. Enough with the "Its never gonna happen" negativity. It can and will happen eventually. But only if we stop being so defeatist from the get go.
I think Sanders, deep down, knows this all too. But its not a politicians job to always be so technocratic. Its about inspiring ideas and movements. Towards a better future. Where healthcare is a right and not a privilege. Creative visualization. You have to first beleive in the goal, and that its reachable.
And all those hurdles that David details SHOULD be spotlighted. And spotlighted as the process moves along in order to highlight where that opposition is coming from (ie. wealthy doctors, wealthy private hospitals, that do better working with private insurers to keep charges/incomes higher).
The title of the video is a bit misleading. "Medicare for All will not happen" should have added "anytime soon". I agree. Between the conservative SCOTUS and the insurance and 1% doctor/hospital lobby, its going to take a lot of effort and some time. And a lot of patience from Democratic supporters. But in the end, it will be worth it, quite literally.

(6,994 posts)but the Insurance Companies spent millions upon millions to fight against the plan.
Even though we had a Majority in the House and Senate all Democrats were not on-board with the idea.
Obama took what he could get and what he got was a plan approved by the Major Insurance Companies and his Majority in Congress.
His plan didn't work well because for low income families his allowance for Medicaid, of which Republican states rejected funding because for no other reason than it was part of
Democratic approved legislation.
Republicans and Trump tried over 50 times to abolish the ACA but failed. .
As I remember Democrats would say about the ACA "Its a start, we can add to the plan later"
Well later is here in 2020.
