Singer performs at a memorial service for iconic astronaut
Singer Diana Krall paid an appropriate tribute to the late Neil Armstrong yesterday, singing "Fly Me to the Moon" at a memorial service for the iconic astronaut. Honoring the first man to walk on the moon, Krall performed a bare, emotional rendition of the song on a grand piano, giving the track a melancholy tint quite removed from Frank Sinatra's famously jolly take.

She quotes "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain" at the end. A jazz thing.

"When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain" is a popular song, published in 1931, and credited as written by Howard Johnson, Harry M. Woods, and Kate Smith. As Johnson is primarily known as a lyricist and Woods, when collaborating with lyricists, primarily wrote music, the actual apportionment of the credits would be likely to be music by Woods, lyrics by Johnson, and possibly some small contribution by Smith in order to give her a share of royalty income.
"When the Moon Comes over the Mountain" became Kate Smith's theme song on radio and television, including her last CBS series, The Kate Smith Show in 1960.

(20,885 posts)3. Thanks for pulling that up.
I was not a great Kate Smith fan, but heard that song many times as a kid. Quoting tunes is a game jazz musicians play with fans. No royalties.
Diana's performance was great!

My favorite version (and favorite earworm), is a toss up between July London and Frank Sinatra. (You tube has both versions).
Ms. Krall's version, including the hint of "Moon Comes Over The Mountain" was beautifully done. A perfect homage to a national hero.
