Randy Newman - "I'm Dreaming" (Of a White President)

NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Newman is weighing in on the presidential election, and he's playing the race card through a song he wrote called "I'm Dreaming."

The piano tune features the refrain: "I'm dreaming of a white president." It is full of satirical, sarcastic — and signature — Newman anecdotes about someone who votes for the president because he is white.

Newman, who is white, is openly supporting President Barack Obama. He says he wants the public to find comedic relief in the song, but to also know he's serious about his thoughts that racism is well and alive in the world — and in the current presidential race. He called racism "the great issue of this country."

"I felt that that sentiment exists in the country," Newman said in an interview Monday. "I don't know how many people you can get to admit it. I think maybe zero."

I love his music too and his messages too. In Short People, he says, all people are like you and me and all brothers. So how can anyone be offended by it?! It’s obviously satire. He’s tall so it’s even more obvious that it’s satyrical. Maybe You’ve Got a friend in me should be the wedding song at gay weddings. That would certainly fit his mindset Love Randy Newman.

My grandfather grew up in Baltimore. He went into business there and did very well in the period before and especially after WWII. As a child and guest of his I often heard rich patrons at golf clubs and restaurants say much the same thing in very plain words over my head even as their drinks, their meals and other needs were catered to by black men and women.

My grandfather did not feel that way although he too catered to a rich clientele. He sold them golf, tennis and other sporting goods. He also saw people as who they were and showed respect to anyone he spoke to.

As a republican he surprised us all one day when he told us Richard Nixon was the worst sort of man to be president and that he'd never vote for anyone like him. He never did.

He would be appalled that anyone as obviously irresponsible and disrespectful of people as Romney and Rand were considered worthy to run as national candidates. He'd damn well be right about that, too!

I just adored this video. Simply amazing. Loved the "star fell out of the sky" bit especially. Clever channeling, too, of the worst aspects of (some of) the greatest generation with his Bing Crosby vibe and nostalgic reverie.

I wonder how many people are hating Randy Newman thinking he was serious.
