- What Does Americas Coronavirus Response Look Like Abroad? | NYT Opinion, July 29, 2020.
The U.S. leads the world in Covid-19 deaths, nearing 150,000 lost lives. The unemployment figures brought on by the pandemic are mind-boggling. The Trump administrations slow & haphazard response has been widely criticized. But what does it look like to young people around the world, whose governments moved quickly & aggressively to contain the coronavirus? We reached out to quite a few & showed them charts, facts, photos & videos illustrating the U.S. response. They were not impressed.
Many advanced economies, from Germany to Singapore, directly supplemented salaries to save jobs. Other nations with fewer resources started mass testing at the first sign of an outbreak. Many countries mandated universal lockdowns- and successfully flattened the curve. In some parts of Europe, you could be fined for straying too far from your home. And Vietnam, a nation of 95 mill people, has not seen a single Covid-19 death. *More, https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/8/2/1966003/-People-from-around-the-world-watched-a-video-on-COVID-in-America-They-could-not-believe-their-eyes?utm_campaign=trending

(23,065 posts)He hates us and always puts profits for himself above our lives. That much is blatantly and obviously true. It also seems very highly likely he's killing us on purpose. I believe those reasons are"
- Hatred for Dems and glee for us dying so we can't vote against him
- Profiteering mightily in every way for himself. This is the vastly under reported calamity of this year and includes -
Making the country wait 90 days for a test being developed by a small co. he was a major investor in.
Making states pay for PPE which were already paid for by taxpayers and making them bid so prices went up 15x
more than the regular price
Refusing to send sufficient PPE to blue states that were in crisis and instead sending it to red states which had no need for it
Declaring war then saying the states were on their own
Refusing to use Defense Act to produce tests, testing supplies and PPE
Pushing hydrochloroquine which is produced by a company he's invested in (more profits for him)
Wanted to open the economy back up in April but was over-ridden
Wanted us to use bleach (which would kill us) and UV light to beat CV
Pushing school re-openings without providing anything extra for states to do this safely and threatening to withhold $ from (blue)
districts that don't open for 5 day a week inschool classes.
Pushing every unsafe behavior there is so businesses can make $ and give it to him & so there is maximum chaos, confusion and
risk at voting time.
I'm sure there is more, but just this is so sad and stupid and fascistic it just makes me want to scream.

(41,103 posts)The US was downgraded from a Full Democracy to a Flawed Democracy by the Economic Index a couple years ago. Mainly for our representatives lack of action on the needs of the people, the unlimited money in politics and corrupted US elections.
Several years ago the UN Special Reporter on Poverty, Philip Alston toured the US and warned of Third World status in areas of the deep south where people live with no real sanitation, raw sewage and even hook worms that were eradicated decades ago but have recently reappeared. He also focused on extreme poverty and large, growing homeless encampments all over esp. in western, warmer and wealthier states and places like LA, San Fran, CA, OR, WA and ID.

(41,103 posts)oppress, it's always been that way. Elites were typically only allowed access to real education, the vote, truthful news, travel and exposure to the world and other ideas and cultures.
The video by The Lincoln Project, "Mourning in America" posted below, could have been filmed 15-30 years ago in many places in America that are run down, de-industrialized wastelands. "Sacrifice Zones" as Chris Hedges calls them.

The food lines - MSNBC is the only network (of the big 3) that have given that any real coverage.
I didnt realize the the pink line was a part of the chart either. When the guy in Singapore said it I saw what the scrolling down was.

(6,617 posts)Such lovely bright faces and so articulate! I cried during it, too. We've been living in Hell, day by day, for so long. They aren't numb to it. Breaking out of denial is painful but urgently necessary.
