"Harvest of Empire": New Doc Tells How US Intervention Caused Mass Latin American

&feature=plcp

DemocracyNow.org - At a time of heated and divisive debate over immigration, the new feature-length documentary, "Harvest of Empire," examines the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today. Based on the groundbreaking book by award-winning journalist and Democracy Now! co-host Juan González, "Harvest of Empire" takes an unflinching look at the role that U.S. economic and military interests played in triggering an unprecedented wave of migration that is transforming our nation's cultural and economic landscape. González is a columnist at the New York Daily News and author of three other books, including "News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media." We're also joined by the film's co-director, Eduardo López.

The history of US intervention in Latin America is not a proud one,
and it isn't getting any better.
The most repressive, Right Wing Police State in South America,
Colombia, is the 3rd largest recipient of US Foreign Aid,
and now has a brand new "Free Trade" treaty with US Corporations.
LABOR and Human Rights organizers are still routinely killed by the Colombian government.

Thats YOUR money!

Just finished a horrible book that discussed the impact of the Monroe Doctrine (although it wasn't the major focus), that said that the U.S. had influence over the Caribbean, Central, and South America. The book was "horrible" not because it is badly written, but because it strips bare the racism and profiteering that has guided our foreign policy. The book was "The Imperial Cruise" by James Bradley. He also wrote "Flags of Our Fathers" and his father was one of the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. He felt the need to research the factors leading to WW2 and this book is the result. It is quite the eye opener (as much of a foundational shift for me as "Lies My Teacher Told Me" and "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" ).
Our view of other nations has been disgusting.
I knew this was in the background of the immigration problem, but didn't have the details. I've been getting more angry about the immigration debate because I suspected they were fleeing our manipulations and exploitations.

finally standing up and restoring their Independence as sovereign nations. Although the West still has, as it always did, a hatred for their democratically elected leaders because they are not right wing dictators, easy to manipulate.

The School of the Americas, what a cynical name for a place where dictators learned how to torture their own people, is a stain on this country's history. The hatred for the Left is intense among the Imperial powers. I guess when you have leaders who care about people, it gets in the way of profits for them.

I will definitely read that book.

it, to discount it, to discourage others from seeing it.

Just seeing your video will tell many people things they've never heard, not once.

So glad a DU'er of principle alerted me to your thread, I am buying the book immediately, will see the film as soon as humanly possible.

Thank you so much for posting this, and welcome to D.U.
