(10,749 posts)Looks like this was BT (before trump).
I understand that you can "deprogram" on an individual level. Or call it what you want. In the way that we've seen here a bit over the past few months with anecdotes about people coming around and realizing that voting for trump, following trump, was wrong. One to one.
How do you deprogram 70 million? Oh, sure, many of those are republicans or conservatives who will not vote D under any circumstances. They've always voted for republicans, yes they are racists and homophobes and misogynists and so are their fellow R voters. They aren't really cultists, they're just unthinking republicans. I found out over the weekend that my neighbor was a lifelong republican, voted for trump in 2016, and voted for Biden this year. He was a military lifer, and that's just what he did - he voted for republicans. He wasn't vile or evil or stupid. He was just a republican. And let's say half of the 70 million voters fall into that category.
But what about the other 35 million? The frothing at the mouth rally-goers. The people in dress in uncle sam suits, etc. How do you deprogram en masse. This woman come to believe she'd made a mistake 5 years in. She was obviously thinking of getting out, and the deprogramming movement was real in the early 1980s, and she was open to change. Again, how do you even reach the cultists? the Moonies? the Hitler youth?
Even the noted cult experts really don't have an answer to that.

(2,065 posts)It would be Mary Trump. After all, she's an insider to the Trump dysfunctional family, and a clinical psychologist to boot. Having spoken to rabid Trump supporters myself, my best guess is that here is a real doozy that puts other cults to shame.
