'Panic buying' is driving the fuel shortage after Colonial Pipeline hack, expert says - PBS NewsHour

The Biden administration says it is trying to mitigate the impact of a cyber attack that disrupted the Colonial Pipeline, which supplies to 45% of the Southeast and is still down five days later. Reports of shortages and rising prices are popping up in states served by the pipeline. Amna Nawaz discusses the aftermath with Tom Kloza, head of energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service.

Is the Russian government involved in the Colonial Pipeline hack? One expert weighs in - PBS NewsHour

The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack showed the vulnerability of key parts of America's critical infrastructure, and how hostile actors can exploit those weaknesses. William Brangham and investigative reporter Michael Weiss look at what role — if any — the Russian government might have played in the hack, and what else might be on the horizon.

2. Oh, sorry I missed your thread, but I have seen posts here today about the gas issue

So that's why I made a point of posting what I've seen and heard on the news. We're not experiencing shortages here in New York, but I know that a lot in the South are right now. We're only experiencing a big price jump, but I'm sure that it's related.

I also posted this link a couple of times yesterday. The site is GasBuddy and I've belonged there since 2010 - it lists the prices of gas in your area (encompasses the U.S. and Canada) and there was an alert just today since they also list places that you can and can't find gas during emergencies. And you don't even need to join, you can just type in your zip code. I have the app on my phone.

And I'm in New York where we have gas - just rapidly escalating prices, likely another effect of the panic. It came and went, kept saying that the servers were overloaded, so I kept on trying since I was attempting to post updated local gas prices on my way home. It was very frustrating, I know. It's usually not like that. It has to be overloaded because of the emergency, everyone checking on gas which seems to be why there's an emergency in the first place.

6. There should be little symbols that indicate if they have gas or not

But if the prices are that old this early in the day, I'd try another place. Glad you finally got through!

7. I'm happy to say, I made the investment in EV years ago.

I am now immune to gasoline prices going up. Don't even watch what happens to them. Don't need to set foot at or touch a fuel pump, unless I'm driving someone else's car, I suppose.

And because my car comes with unlimited lifetime charging grandfathered in, the cost of every mile I travel is subtracted from my purchase price.

You too can say good-bye, like many of us are doing. You just have to go for it.

9. What kind of EV did you get? How do you like it? Range anxiety?

The two things that get me is the range anxiety and long charging times... Then again when I want to take a long trip I could always rent something... ymmv

14. Tesla (used) w/grandfathered unlimited charging

They're cheap and the cost of ownership compared to an ICE vehicle goes down with use. The Tesla Web site shows which used ones have unlimited supercharging. Most people don't realize when they drop $35,000 for a new VW or Dodge, they could have purchased one of these primo Teslas! Power to those who look it up.

No range anxiety. The computer figures out everything. The driver is just a stooge that follows what it says. If I'm driving too fast to reach my destination, the car tells me to slow down. In routes where I don't like to slow down, I simply charge a little longer prior to that leg. There's nowhere I cannot take my Telsa, including remote areas, but it sometimes requires planning. I have charging adapters so I can charge at campgrounds, using the RV hookups. Thus far, I have paid $0.00 in three years to travel about 20,000 miles.

I've taken it from the southern U.S. to the northern U.S. It just takes longer to reach my destination. But when I arrive, I arrive in style!! My car's range is still over 242 miles. The lowest I've run the battery down to has been 24 miles. The computer's calculations for range are solid.

I don't really watch the miles remaining anymore, it's irrelevant. I only watch my percentage battery remaining to my destination. That's the true indicator of how I'm doing and why I have no range anxiety. It's never been wrong in a bad way. Most times I arrive with more than it forecast, because I'm smooth with my foot and I don't regularly drive faster than the flow of traffic.
