Former Chicago Tribune editor Mark Jacob says Democrats and Republicans cannot be covered the same because Republicans have overwhelmed the media with corruption, creating something he calls scandal fatigue. Jacob, along with Columbia University journalism professor Jelani Cobb, join Lawrence ODonnell to discuss how the media must change the way it reports on the two major political parties to best serve the public. Aired on 09/30/2021.

(205,165 posts)The mods had what was called the Bad Site List. If we had any questions, we could consult that list - and obviously nothing from those bad sources was allowed to stand. I've seen this recently here as well and wish that we still had access to that list...

(205,165 posts)It wasn't until the craziness of TFG that we saw obviously partisan organizations like OAN given equal time - and allowed to disrupt - White House press briefings.

(57,075 posts)... Now it's more about purely selling papers.
In some ways, it's also because of the huge amount of new from all over and everywhere. And there's so many more outlets than papers - tv, cable, internet - how many 24hr news sources we have and instant on the scene reporting. Compare that to the last battle of the War of 1812 happening several weeks after the US and GB signed the Treaty of Ghent ending that war. That battle was at New Orleans.
We are in an information avalanche every day, and the organs are all carrying, by and large, the same stories regardless of the individual takes. This invites sensation to become the attention grabber for ratings and paper sales.

(205,165 posts)We used to hear important news from all over the world, but when TFG took office, his outrageous actions and bids for attention took over the news, they actually had trouble covering it all. And I also think that speaks to your selling points - people watched and reacted to the headlines.

That became clear back in 2015/16.
