(2,636 posts)Is it semantics, or is one group of Christains separating themselves from other Christains?
Believing Jesus died to save people from hell, that the bible is authoritative and inerrant is how this guy defines Evangelical.
The great commission commands Christains to spread the good news of the gospel. The Evangelicals are salesmen. They believe it's their purpose in life to convince others to abandon their own beliefs and adopt those of the Bible Salesman. Some might call it indoctrination since they're big on teaching their Bible mythology to children, beginning with Sunday School lessons for 3 and 4 year olds.
The Evangelicals seem to be the zealots among the Christain community. This guy is an outlier, but I hope there are more outliers, a la John Pavlovitz. The grossly uneducated rabble rousing, attention seeking GOP representatives backing insurrection all proudly claim to be Christian.
They're separating from the radical extremists.

(2,809 posts)Religion became a sore point with my family. When my brother got in some trouble, landed in jail, and our Methodist minister refused to go visit with him...
We were done with church in general. Already fed up with the pretentious out-Jonesing inherent in church gatherings, my parents were long fed up with the hypocrisy, and as mixed blood family, my parents had to elope long ago to marry because of my dad's darker skin,
Hispanic and African heritage, as we found out from DNA tests. I am half "white"... and horribly ashamed of it:
West coast separation from mom's family was hard on her, and I was shocked many years later when attempts to rekindle ties with some of them failed spectacularly. On a visit with one of my cousins I was already a little dismayed with his RW-isms, I wasn't even allowed in the door of one of my overly "white" cousins home and told that I am disallowed, in their belief system to go to heaven! (Fluck that!!!) The whole bunch are undoubtedly Trumpers now with that solid racism, none of my side of the family has any contact whatsoever. One cousin who I'd requested to cease putting racist anti-Obama memes on my BookFace page, not only defriended me but the next day I got massively attacked on FB messenger from hundreds of crazies. I de-activated that profile and won't be back.
To me, "evangelicals" certainly strayed far from the "angels" incorporated in that label, especially since Trump, truly self-righteously evil.
I'll never know if any of that side of my lineage are alive or dead. God knows if some of them knew I am LGBT they'd be out for blood.
Tell me you're "evangelical" and I'm afraid of you, very afraid and with more profound reasons having to do with a group called Westboro's.
Wackjobs.
