Isabel Wilkerson: 'The Defeated' Wrote The History Of The Civil War - The Last Word - MSNBC

"How was it that a rioter was able to deliver the confederate flag further than Robert E. Lee himself?” Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist Isabel Wilkerson tells Lawrence O'Donnell that "there was never a true reckoning after the Civil War and for that reason we are still reliving it." Aired on 10/21/2021.

Today! The documentary series "Reconstruction" on PBS explained how he changed the mandates after the Civil War - giving land to freed slaves to start a new life. Andrew Johnson took back that land and returned it to the former slave-holder owners so they'd "owe" him - he was seeking retribution for their treatment of him in the past. If only the plans to give reparations to former slaves at the time had not been rescinded by Andrew Johnson, I believe we'd be looking at a much different country today.

... without Andrew Johnson's wicked shenanigans so soon after the Civil War.

A cautionary tale about picking a VP to supposedly help win an election.

At least dump them later!

I remember reading that Eisenhower actually had little regard for Nixon and didn't actually work with him much. And we also know that it was much the same with JFK and LBJ, they were often at odds. I believe it was Jimmy Carter who changed the relationship, he gave Mondale a lot more discretion and power to handle issues on his own - and he considered them a "team."

Can't remember at this moment when that changed.

And how he changed the role of the VP - along with many other things, including attempting to streamline the way things worked, established the Department of Energy and split the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Little wonder that he cared about having a prepared and competent VP.

It's called "A Full Life: Reflections at 90," and he really has led a fascinating life. I have it on disc, read by the author(!), and I don't think he even got to his run for president until disc #5! He was also criticized for allowing Rosalynn into Cabinet Meetings, but she had been instrumental in his campaign and understood the issues - and he was weary of answering all her questions, so he decided to just let her hear what was going on first-hand!
