I participated in some Coffee Party events when the Tea Party was demonstrating against the prospects of Obamacare in 2008 or so. We formed a small group in Houston and practiced the conversation principles promoted by the Coffee Party. It was a wonderful experience.

A newspaper article came out discussing the Coffee Party. At our next meeting, some very nasty thugs showed up to try to intimidate and disrupt. Participants invited them to have some cookies and join discussion tables, with a quick review of the rules. It took the wind right out of their sails.

They didn't stay long, but the deescalation was rapid and effective.

We need some groups like this today.

I'd like to see Deliberative Democracy-type groups formed to discuss the fundamental principles of democracy. Maybe participate in some sort of simulation to experience democracy vs autocracy.

We must bring democratic principles back into common understanding again.
