rings true. It was 1967, so about the same time as the film depicts.

The kids did awful things to the teachers, especially the new, or female teachers.

As a middle schooler I was pretty shocked by their rotten behavior. "Caning" and "slippering" were common corporal punishments.

The old ones took out their embarrassment or anger on the younger ones.

It was Lord of the Flies every day.
