Clyburn: Voting rights bill is 'democracy versus autocracy' - NewsNation Prime

While many see the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as a pipe dream, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn says the cause is worth the uphill struggle.

“If they do it to African-Americans today and people of color, they’ll do it to others in the not too distant future, so that’s what this is all about,” Clyburn said on NewsNation Prime on Sunday. “I want people to stop looking at this as being Democrats versus Republicans. No, this is democracy versus autocracy. That’s what this issue is.” 01/16/2022.

Cripes it sickens me that we even have to engage in such discussions.

I recall being a kid, horrified to learn UN observers worked in "3rd world" countries to ensure the integrity of the people's votes. And here we are...

That's been one of The Carter Center's main initiatives - ensuring safe and accurate elections in third world countries and eliminating preventable diseases. He talks about both in his autobiography. I have often thought that we could use that help here now.

He has a heart of humanitarian gold.

I agree, we could most certainly use that help here now!

Even TN, an obviously "safe" red state, from a white male terrorist's perspective, has just passed ridiculous absentee ballot changes requiring a watermark. Sounds as if they are terrified real public servants could be elected. 😱

But these red hellhole states are building huge auto plants & srmteel mills so, hopefully, urban folks will shift the demographics. Fingers crossed! 🤞🤞🤞

It has always boggled my mind how anyone who works for a living could vote R.

I knew nothing about politics, just that I really liked him! And of course no one initially took him seriously since he had yet to receive national attention. My brother picked on me at the time - but he not only won, and has proven to be one of our most forward looking presidents. And when I got his biography ("A Full Life: Reflections at 90" ), I admire him even more and realize that I agree with him on more than I even realized.

And my cousin who grew up near D.C. (my uncle worked in D.C.) married a guy from Tennessee who was actually the only one of my cousins' husbands who I really liked. But after his father died, they moved to Tennessee and she started sending me emails supporting prayer in schools and that kind of thing and I really hope she hasn't become a right-winger.

And I can't imagine anyone voting Republican, especially now - but then I obviously wasn't even a fan of Reagan.
