(6,699 posts)We SHOULD agree to restrict Ukraine from NATO. If that allows for peace in Ukraine, than a damned small price to pay. Russia does not want a NATO power on it's border. This is threatening to them, and it serves no purpose to admit them to NATO, except to piss off the dictator, Putin. Time to back off.
Ukraine can take care of itself. Should Russia invade, we can apply all the sanctions we want...but threatening Russia with a large neighbor that could be part of NATO serves no constructive purpose.

Putin does not get to dictate for all of Europe until after he conquers all of Europe.

(3,334 posts)Poland was not Germany's enemy in that Poland was not going to invade Germany. If Ukraine joins NATO then Russia and Belarus will have a 3122-mile border with their enemy. 1945 was not really very long ago and Russia has a long memory and that includes knowing that in 1945 Churchill had his military make plans to invade the Soviet Union with the help of the U.S. The U.S. probably was not informed of the plans because they showed that the Soviet Union would win.

(6,699 posts)Finland has been neutral...a non-NATO nation bordering Russia. Russia has Belarus as a buffer from NATO nations. If NATO were to expand to Ukraine, Russia would then have a NATO nation spanning thousands of miles on their western border.
This whole international situation has a history that goes back generations. Threatening NATA membership is not a wise option at this point.
