Because he can't answer the smart ones?

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/01/dear-andrew-sullivan-why-focus-on-obamas-dumbest-critics/251528/

But his Newsweek essay fits the pattern I've lamented of Obama apologists who tell a narrative of his administration that ignores some of these issues and minimizes the importance of others, as if they're a relatively unimportant matter to be set aside in a sentence or three before proceeding to the more important business of whether the president is being critiqued fairly by obtuse partisans.

Sullivan should reconsider this approach.

During President Bush's first term, Sullivan will recall the most unhinged attacks on him -- the comparisons to Hitler, the puppets burned in effigy, the comparisons to a chimp. There wasn't anything wrong with lamenting those attacks, just as there's nothing wrong with pointing out exaggerated and baseless attacks on Obama, which have spread through most of the Republican Party. But the priority put on rebutting the least persuasive left-wing critiques of Bush, and pre-election 2004 worrying about the flaws of the Democratic field, are part of what postponed the backlash against Bush's ruinous policies. The backlash should've been the priority all along.

Sullivan is proud to say he backed Reagan in the 1980s.

Sullivan was a huge cheerleader for the Iraq War.

I really could care less what he thinks about anything.

If you watched the entire video you'd see this negativity is pretty much what Andrew IS talking about; the need to follow in lockstep with the Platonian ideal of liberalism. I agree Andrew's views on a LOT of matters put him into a pretty much moderate type but with your post of "I really could care less what he thinks about anything" plays right into, well I'll leave it at that.

That is the move of someone out to stroke their own ego, not change minds. It's an insult considering how egregiously wrong Sullivan has been and still is on many of his opinions.

BTW, just to be clear, I am speaking as someone who will vote for Obama despite my disappointment in him.

he says in the MSNBC interview that the words "dumb" and "stupid" do not appear in his writing... that was an editorial decision on the part of Newsweek's editors to put those words on the cover of their magazine. So put the blame where it belongs--on Newsweek's editors, not on Sullivan.

calling them dumb is telling the truth, because they are acting like that: whether or not they truly are remains to be proved.

Matthews gave the title of the artcle, and Sullivan said nothing. He went on to ridicule people with "ponytails in their 50s." He has a history of ridiculing and insulting those who do not agree with his politcal point of view.

Sullivan is an arrogant asshole who likes to flaunt his imagined superior intelligence. There was no bigger or more obnoxious cheerleader for the war on terror. He had this to say about anti-war protesters back in 2001:

The middle part of the country—the great red zone that voted for Bush—is clearly ready for war. The decadent Left in its enclaves on the coasts is not dead—and may well mount what amounts to a fifth column.

Yes, he called anti-war protestors traitors. What a guy!

Why are people on DU cheering this guy? Did anyone notice he called Obama economic policies center-right?

While, he did make some valid points about how many voters on the right have been misled about Obama's track record, I noticed that he saved his most biting insults for the critics on the left. The left who were right about the wars that Sullivan vigorously supported.

I mostly support, and sometimes criticize The President..... but I'll be damned if I will listen to the opinion of this conservative Popinjay.

We need a correction from Reagan? Really? Why is that? Because you conservative pigs ruined this country and now you want liberals to clean up your mess.

The guy speaks out of both sides of his mouth. Until he repudiates EVERYTHING he and his conservative pig friends stand for, he can go fuck himself.

To hear him make fun of people with pony tails makes me laugh. The first time I met this sawed off prick, we was dressed in full leather with his little gestapo hat.

A grown "conservative" man who likes to dress up like some nazi cartoon character shouldn't make fun of someone with a pony tail. Bareback Andy should stfu.

The Conservative Blogger who is like a stopped watch is A.O.K. because he's behind the President, but any liberal bloggers who criticize him are thrown under the bus.

If Andrew Sullivan were running for President he would get about the same level of respect that Ron Paul or John Huntsman get on DU. The same people who are lauding him now would be saying that any good policies he proposed weren't really good because they were based in ultranational conservatism.

he's a great speaker, but his content is lacking. That's what comes from debate club, I guess.

10. Dear Andrew Sullivan: Why Focus on Obama's Dumbest Critics?
Thu Jan 19, 2012, 03:36 PM
Jan 2012

A major defense of the president exaggerates Obama's accomplishments and misses the point: his scandalous transgressions against rule of law. After reading Andrew Sullivan's Newsweek essay about President Obama, his critics, and his re-election bid, I implore him to ponder just one question. How would you have reacted in 2008 if any Republican ran promising to do the following?

(1) Codify indefinite detention into law; (2) draw up a secret kill list of people, including American citizens, to assassinate without due process; (3) proceed with warrantless spying on American citizens; (4) prosecute Bush-era whistleblowers for violating state secrets; (5) reinterpret the War Powers Resolution such that entering a war of choice without a Congressional declaration is permissible; (6) enter and prosecute such a war; (7) institutionalize naked scanners and intrusive full body pat-downs in major American airports; (8) oversee a planned expansion of TSA so that its agents are already beginning to patrol American highways, train stations, and bus depots; (9) wage an undeclared drone war on numerous Muslim countries that delegates to the CIA the final call about some strikes that put civilians in jeopardy; (10) invoke the state-secrets privilege to dismiss lawsuits brought by civil-liberties organizations on dubious technicalities rather than litigating them on the merits; (11) preside over federal raids on medical marijuana dispensaries; (12) attempt to negotiate an extension of American troops in Iraq beyond 2011 (an effort that thankfully failed); (14) reauthorize the Patriot Act; (13) and select an economic team mostly made up of former and future financial executives from Wall Street firms that played major roles in the financial crisis.

It isn't that I object to Sullivan backing Obama's reelection if his GOP opponent runs on bringing back torture. Is he the lesser of two evils? Maybe so. But lauding him as a president who has governed "with grace and calm" and "who as yet has not had a single significant scandal to his name"? If indefinite detention, secret kill lists, warrantless spying, a war on whistleblowers, violating the War Powers Resolution, and abuse of the state secrets privilege don't fit one's definition of "scandal," what does? If they're peripheral flaws rather than central, unacceptable transgressions, America is doomed to these radical, illiberal policies for the foreseeable future.

Of course, it's so much easier to dismantle the criticism from the right as being totally false. Notice how he barely touched on the criticism from the left, since those are harder to dismiss.
But that's cool. I'd rather have Obama than one of the republican candidates, by far.

I am going to vote for Obama, but yet I get called "anti-Obama" among several other insults, by some nitwit sycophant. A fellow DUer who is now on full ignore. I'm still irritated by that exchange.

LUCKY they are with Obama. No, he isn't a leftwing purist, but he IS the MOST progressive President since LBJ even as a "moderate pragmatist" since he has passed the most amount of legislation that brought some PROGRESS to the nation since LBJ. People need to count their blessings, and yes, ENOUGH of this backseat bitching and STUPID threats to "stay home" and bitch and then bitch even louder if a RePUKE gets in, just like in 2010. The bitchers stayed home and bitched about Obama and Dems in 2010, then they bitched even louder and ARE bitching even louder now that RePUKES control the House and so many more statehouses. Enough of that SHIT.

A right of center guy likes President Obama since Obama represents his views. That's exactly what President Obama's critics from the left have been saying all along.

Plus Sullivan is correct about the Republicans. They have no interest in doing anything for our country as long as it may make President Obama look good - shameless.

Im not happy about everything Obama did or didnt do. But this is a election year! Shut the hell up and get inline then after the election hold Obama feet to the fire again.

It does no good now to bash Obama. He is light years better then anything the The Republican side will do the next four years. I really dont get it. We need to come together and get Obama reelected! To say your not going to vote for him and let a Republican win is dumb!

If I could go back 4 years ago I would have voted different but we have him now and a center Obama is way better then any of those crazy republicans.
