Thom Hartmann did not disappoint. He told the unfortunate truth about Americas destructive path to neoliberalism and how to get out.

(5,125 posts)AND calling this Capitilism market drives everything as NeoLiberalism? Isn't that blaming DEMs?
Air America USED to be an actual Liberal Radio Network, but he and Santita Jackson are doing all this complaining about DEMS not doing enough as if Liberals not being able to effect massive changes is as bad as MAGA destroying Democracy.
WTF?

(5,125 posts)I have several of Thom's books and I listened to him for years.
BUT by using THIS label it practically EXCLUDES the OLIGARCHS that he is actually saying are the problem.
We have MAGA's calling us LIBTARDS, so with the emphasis on neoLIBERALism it seems to BLAME US for the problem.
I don't know. Maybe this way it's a bait and switch to educate the REICH?
From what he said, the economists stepped away from the progress we'd made with works programs etc... up to 1980's when Reagan came in and crashed things... but it's been moving toward that since 40's when they decided "the market" was a non-biased way to regulate things. Obama put a bandaid on it, tRump pulled it off and we have the top 1% and a call for unregulated Capitalism as "the solution" although it's failed everywhere it's been tried.
Well, failed to bring about a real middle class which is the only way our economy really benefits the majority of people.

(10,048 posts)term Neoliberalism and his solutions, which is to go back to more regulation, competition, unions and tariffs on value added goods. He is absolutely correct. He also claimed it started long before Reagan, in the 30's and yes, has pretty much failed everywhere.

(5,125 posts)I had some ideas I shared with him and all he said was start up a Facebook page and see if it went anywhere.
And maybe he starts these thing this way to get the Independent or fringe Republicans to read it thinking they will at least start if they think he's blaming Liberals.
His book about 2nd Amendment Rights and Oligarchy are good once you get past this same kind of schtick.
Lately I don't have the patience I used to.
Thanks for the push.

During the interview, Hartmann and Cohen accepted as fact the conspiracy theory that snipers on the side of the new anti-Russia government fired on their own side in the main square in Kiev so that the now-ousted president Viktor Yanukovych would be blamed.
Hartmann and Cohen also referred the new anti-Russian Ukrainian government as "extremists." "The extremists came to power sharing, they are sharing power now," Cohen said, to Hartmann's agreement. "Obama unwisely keeps declaring the government in Kiev as legitimate," Cohen added.
The Ukrainian governing coalition involves power-sharing between several parties, one of which, Svoboda, is ultranationalist with fascist roots.
Hartmann suggested that the new anti-Russia government in Ukraine were neo-Nazis. "If you listen to the words of these guys in the cabinet, if you listen to the words of the party, they are openly antisemitic, they are openly nationalistic, they are open aggressive," Hartmann said. "Some may think calling them Nazis is a slur, some of them wouldn't refer to themselves that way, but some of them embrace swastikas."
Hartmann has in the past defended Russia on issues like gay rights, saying that Russia is not as bad as Saudi Arabia in terms of gay rights while pointing out that the United States did to give women the right to vote until 1920.

The second Yatsenyuk government was created in Ukraine after the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election. On 2 December 2014, 288 members (of the 423[3]) of the Ukrainian parliament approved the composition of the cabinet.[1][2] The Government was backed by (the political parties) Petro Poroshenko Bloc, People's Front, Self Reliance, Fatherland and Radical Party.[4]
Radical Party left the coalition on 1 September 2015.[5]
After Fatherland and Self Reliance left the coalition on 17 and 18 February 2016 the coalition became 5 deputies short of the 226 needed.[6][7] It was then disputed that Radical Party had left the coalition until on 29 March 2016 it was officially announced in parliament that on September 1, 2015, Radical Party had left the coalition.[8][9][10]
On 10 April 2016 Prime Minister Yatsenyuk announced he resigned.[11] On 14 April 2016 Yatsenyuk was replaced by new Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and thus the Groysman Government became the next cabinet of Ukraine.[12]

I GUESS like our comedy acts who roast Joe Biden even though he has hit the ground running and done so much for America to put out the fires TFG Traitor Dumpety tRump set and continues to throw deranged fuel onto AND does proactive things like STOP A RR STRIKE that could cost US a BILLION A DAY......
Thom thinks he is being "fair" by calling out behavior that falls beneath his standards no matter who does it.
I GUESS IF HE TOOK THE TIME TO ACTUALLY SAY POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT STEPS DEMS TAKE, I COULD TOLERATE HIM MORE.
I NEVER HAVE LIKED WHINERS.
IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT, DON'T JUST WHINE ABOUT IT, GET UP OFF YOUR DUFF AND DO SOMETHING.
He may think that writing a book is enough, but using a bully pulpit to simply bully people instead of giving ANY encouragement when people do the right thing RUBS me the wrong way.
He hasn't always been this bad.

Politics stop at the waters edge: It matters when a democracy like Ukraine is taken down by an autocracy

Trumps enthusiasm for the collapse of Ukraine notwithstanding, the most basic element of all law down through the ages is the right of bodily autonomy: the right not to have your body invaded.
When it is done physically it is called assault; when sexually, it is rape. As the 1920s Temperance Movement saying goes, Your right to swing your arm ends where the other mans nose begins.
The core principle of international law is similar. No nation has the right to violate the territorial integrity of another, except in self-defense. That principle has been, the western world asserts, violated by Russia with their invasion of Ukraine.
But Thom was wrong.
American sanctions DID work.
Russian money is kaputski.
Ukraine DID get military equipment and support, not just from America.
AND right.
Sweden and Finland DID join NATO.
AND HIS rambling attacks on everything could be taken by Russian media out of context.

Neoliberalism: do you know what it is?
Its anonymity is both a symptom and cause of its power. It has played a major role in a remarkable variety of crises: the financial meltdown of 2007‑8, the offshoring of wealth and power, of which the Panama Papers offer us merely a glimpse, the slow collapse of public health and education, resurgent child poverty, the epidemic of loneliness, the collapse of ecosystems, the rise of Donald Trump. But we respond to these crises as if they emerge in isolation, apparently unaware that they have all been either catalysed or exacerbated by the same coherent philosophy; a philosophy that has or had a name. What greater power can there be than to operate namelessly?
