(24,280 posts)As expected, an excellent documentary.
Ken Burns and I happen to have been born on the same day, same year.

(205,183 posts)And I agree, it was tough to watch, but something that we all need to know, agree with Ken Burns that this is relevant now! And that is very cool that you share a birthday - the only "famous" person I share a birthday with is Eleanor Roosevelt, but different year.
Mr.Bill
(24,280 posts)is Geddy Lee, bassist and singer for Rush.
For different years, the first name that comes up is Benito Mussolini.

(205,183 posts)My condolences to your wife. However, my great aunt was also born on June 14th - Flag Day - and she not only lived to 97, but she was also a lifelong Democrat.

(24,280 posts)My Direct TV listings says episodes two is followed by episode three, but that seems odd since it would run into the wee hours.

(205,183 posts)Then there's a half hour of news, followed by two more airings of part 2. Part 3 - series finale - is scheduled for Wednesday.
Mr.Bill
(24,280 posts)I think the listing I have may be mistaken. They are probably showing a repeat tonight like on your listings.

(53,949 posts)He needed another segment, at least an hour to shine a light on the aftermath of the Holocaust and the intense anti-Semitism that followed. I hope people learned a lot from this documentary, but I feel there was an opportunity to add more, and ending with the present, well, there were other examples of anti-Semitism that should have been highlighted, as well.

(205,183 posts)I'll go back to it later.
And from what I saw tonight, he did speak some to the aftermath, that even the U.S. was reluctant to admit survivors. Unbelievable, after what we know now. I wish I could talk to my Dad who visited Europe as a young student - must have been 1950. He said that there was still devastation in Germany, particularly Munich - and that Berlin was under control of rotating allies, that you did not want to go there when the Russians were in charge.
And this is something that he would have watched, he was big on documentaries - not to mention that he was alive during the war, though he was not old enough to serve. And growing up, most of his friends that he spoke about - and I remember two of them - were Jewish. I can't imagine their reaction to the atrocities of that war. Just this documentary was painful for me to watch.

(53,949 posts)While he did discuss some of the aftermath, it wasn't even close to what was happening here and in Germany. Jews and others were actually put back into concentration camps! Even after the Holocaust, there were members of Congress who refused to bend in regard to letting Jews in this country! Oh, they had NO goddamned problem letting in Nazis and their collaborators, but Jews...fuck them. There was no discussion about all the "civilized" countries who refused additional Jews, not Eastern Europeans, JEWS, into their respective countries. He left out the number of Jews who tired to return home only to be forced out again or murdered. Can you imagine? You survive the Holocaust only to be struck down in your "home" country?!
Frankly, I saw so much in part 3 that made me sad, angry, and FURIOUS, especially when I see some of the same shit all over, including those who utilize anti-Semitism but claim it is really "something else".
I don't think people care about Jews, including some Jews! Not in the least. I know some do. I am glad they are out there because in reality, I think the Holocaust, against the Jews, could easily happen again, and the SAME reactions from the world and its populace would (((ECHO))).
I will say, to you, thank you for posting.

(205,183 posts)I've always watched documentaries, but this one was different, I can see why Ken Burns said this is the most important one of his life. He pulled out all the stops to tell the entire unvarnished story. I sure hope that people tuned in. We cover the World Wars in history class in school, but this was up close, detailed - and personal.
And I've never understood the bigotry, my best friend in high school and also in college were both Jewish and I grew up with Jewish neighbors and, like I said, my parents' friends. I never thought about anyone's religion one way or another since nobody mentioned it. And I still don't understand it - but then I watched that previous documentary on PBS.
What really got to me was the footage of the little children at the beginning of part 3 - and the thought that the majority in this country back then objected to having them as fellow citizens. And, like you said, bigotry is on an upswing now in this country. I have never understood that, either, still don't.
