I first covered this highly disturbing story after The New York Times ran a major story last month on the cover-up and controversy in Steubenville, Ohio, involving vicious sexual assaults on a teen girl last Augustthe silencing at least partly due to the fact that some of the alleged perpetrators are high school football players in a football-mad town.
And this is a town, not far from Pittsburgh, that I have visited dozens of timesand driven right past the Big Red stadium. My wifes familys home is just a few miles west. Long ago I devoted a chapter in one of my books to a sheriff just across the river in Weirton, West Virginia, who risked his life to probe entrenched local corruption and gambling interests.
The shocking Times story, titled Rape Case Unfolds Online and Divides Steubenville, even included a passage revealing that one of the two reporters for the paper had been verbally threatened with harm by the high school football coach, a central figure in the drama. I was surprised the Times did not make more of that subsequently.
Perhaps thats because the story quickly was forgotten (by most) in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But this week it has resurfaced and drawn much more national attention, from sports blogs to The Atlantic.
Warning: The video contains graphic and disturbing language about rape.

(2,979 posts)are running this story...but as someone mentioned on another blog.
All this evidence being out now, may hinder prosecutions chances for convictions.

How about the fact that they can never expunge a record that consists of your name plastered all over the world and signalling you as the rapists? That's one hell of a future they have waiting for them!
But let's hope they get to serve time too.

(47,552 posts)16 year old guys can be pretty dumb and cruel, but this is above and beyond.
All these a-holes in the videos and posts bragging and laughing about it as it is happening should be charged as accessories to kidnapping and rape imo. And each of the culprits should be charged and prosecuted, not just the 2 they have arrested so far.
What worries me is how many thousands or millions of times something like this happens every year and it DOESN'T get filmed, the poor victim is too afraid or ashamed to press charges or was drugged or drunk and doesn't even know what happened, and the a-holes get away scott-free. They say 1 in 3 women get raped in their lifetimes. Makes me afraid to ever have kids.
Also makes me wonder about the prevalence of internet porn in our culture. Can be tempting for any male, and I'm certainly not a prude or a saint, but porn tends to be pretty misogynistic, and this is many teens first exposure to sex. And how different from rape is videotaping an 18 year old who is probably addicted to something and desperate for $ getting exploited on camera?

(7,875 posts)I heard about a similar incident when I was in high school. That is to say a bunch of jocks from my school took an unconscious drunk girl and ran a train on her on a pool table.
The only thing that's changed is that now these clowns have cell phones and the incomprehensible, contemptible stupidity to make videos of themselves talking about raping an unconscious girl. If only for that these assholes should have their balls cut off, to prevent them from further contaminating the gene pool.

(4,252 posts)This is not teenagers raping teenagers but law enforcement and school board members and teachers involved with illegal gambling, corruption, bribery, cocaine, underage drinking, cheating allowed at school, date rape drugs provided to these football players and gang raping in the homes of coaches and the district attorney. This is a blockbuster of a movie and it not made up. This should be investigated by the federal justice department.

(649 posts)perhaps your right,. I was angry,. when I typed that.
Still I think atonement is needed here,. for ALL the people involved in attempting to cover this up as well,. . public shaming is one level, I suppose physical confinement will suffice,. put as many of these miscreants in prison for as long as possible,. I don't want them walking around in my community.

(950 posts)on this, and it's mind-boggling.
The level of corruption in Steubenville is sickening. The town needs to be investigated by either the state authorities or the Department of Justice.
In my best Jack Nicholson/Joker voice, all I can say is, "This town needs an enema."
Repulsive. Small-town values on parade.

(4,252 posts)They never mention the underage drinking and who is providing it. They never mention the date rape drug she was given. Nor do they mention the district attorney who advised the victim was the mother of one of the football players at the party or that one of the parties was at her home.
SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
