(17,193 posts)... living in the Philly suburbs until recently, I had been pumping my own gas since the 1970s. I had no idea this was not usual.

(2,404 posts)I've seen out-of-state people trying to pump their own. Saw a dude pull out a smoke while leaning against his car door-fortunately the attendant saw him do it. And there was a lady about three years ago (I think in Portland; can't remember) who drove away with the pump handle in the tank.
You pull in, sit there during the fill-up, pay, leave. It's not that hard.
Most Oregonians like it. There's a lot of reasons to like it. The weather often sucks, if you're disabled or sick, or if you don't know how to pump it, which sounds incredible if you've been pumping it yourself your whole life, I know- or if you're dressed up for work or a special occasion. I guess we're spoiled that way.
I hate the smell of it. We always tip and talk to the attendant.
