Speed& Angle of the curb?::how tall are curbs in California? I can't get a picture to embed. I hope someone else can. From ABC7.com

The white Nissan Altima crossed three lanes on 17th before it hit a center divider, soared into the air and plowed into the two-story structure, the Orange County Fire Authority said.

It was unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said. ## Right##

(53,410 posts)I waited 51 years for the year 2000 so we could have those flying cars!!
It never occurred to me that our scientific progress would be de-evolving!
I'm so disappointed!

I'm only familiar with regular physics. Californian Physics may very well be different. I have often suspected it is.

(10,418 posts)And/or that center divider was a ramp about 5 feet high.

(23,586 posts)Only way I can think of the car getting that high.

(40,416 posts)That's the only rational explanation.

(15,805 posts)We were driving in the opposite direction and saw a cloud of dirt and this car came flying out it. We had to stop. It was horrible, three people died, two were little kids who got ejected. Cops were there really fast, took statements. They said the car drifted onto the soft should at a high rate of speed, the driver over corrected and a tire caught the asphalt edge of the road and the inertia launched it upward and into the pole.

California content: totally, for sure.
Yeah, I saw the pictures. That was an impressive thing.

(24,238 posts)It was a median strip with somewhat of a berm in the middle of it. You can see part of it in the lower right of the picture. The car still had to be moving pretty fast, though.

(47,534 posts)Could've been way worse.

(10,418 posts)I'd say drugs and/or alcohol were definitely involved. I guess he might have dropped a lit cigarette into his crotch.

(32,929 posts)But someone who lives in California would have a better idea of the curb/ median heights then I do here in Ohio. And when I saw from the WaPo video that the medians there are rather mounded, then flattish as they are here...explained the ramp affect for me. Plus the idea of the mathematical angles, speed& mass of the car& passengers appealed to me.

(1,967 posts)If he hadn't gone airborne he might have hit the bus.
Iggo
(47,534 posts)Looks like he probably would've killed the bus driver.
So far I've counted three ways he could've died (tree, black car, bus) and at least four people he could possibly have killed (himself, his passenger, black car guy, bus driver).
Might not seem like it right now, but that was his lucky day.

(219 posts)I saw on a FB news post that the driver was under the influence of LSD - which explains a LOT!
