I'm making homemade split pea soup

My sister made a corned beef & cabbage dinner last week and she gave me a quart of the cooking broth.

I was thinking of making lentil soup, but I didn't have any lentils in the house.

Being 1/2 French Canadian, I'm using the yellow split peas.

It smells good in here.

I have tried to make it many times, but could never get the results I wanted. I used yellow split peas, green split peas.

I have followed several recipes I have found on the internet. Try to avoid using bacon, but have a couple of times. I am not a great cook, but I am functional.

Could you please share your recipe and any tips?

But since I didn't have a ham bone, this time I used the recipe on the back of the Goya peas, substituting the broth my sister gave me for one quart of the liquid (need 2 more cups of water) and using only 1/2 cube bullion because the broth I was using was plenty salty.

I will look up my Dad's recipe and send it to you via DU mail.

You are going to a lot of trouble for me. It is much appreciated. I thought perhaps you were using an online recipe. If I can ever return the favor, let me know. I make a lot of tex-mex, stir frys, and do make fairly good stew using pork butt roast as a base (also either beef broth or chicken broth - probably sounds weird, but is good).

Again, thank you. You have made a man pseudo chef very appreciative.

Years ago, a restaurant in Ann Arbor served a delicious pea soup, and if you ordered it, you could choose one of two accompaniments, a side of sour cream or a small glass of sherry (meant to be drizzled over the top and not mixed in). I have to say, that remains one of my best restaurant memories of all time.

I was having lunch with my grandfather. I was only about 10 years old at the time. He used to take me into Canada and all around Detroit. Good memories!

I add celery, onion and quite a few chopped potatoes. Plus ham or bacon bits. Is it still pea soup? Dunno, but still good.

Not as good as homemade, but good.

I don't mind a little extra salt... I add salt to most everything.
