(63,221 posts)Her name is Roxi and she is 10 months old and about 75 pounds, so not done growing yet. She's going to be a big girl but she is a gentle giant. She's so sweet and affectionate!
Leghorn21
(13,520 posts)the second shot of her, Roxi is unquestionably a complete bundle of sweet!!

(63,221 posts)She is so sweet! A little mouthy right now, but that is because she is still a puppy - she's getting better. But she's very smart. She has already learned a number of commands and she is just so sweet and affectionate. She loves people and being around us always. I just adore her!

(5,210 posts)Here are mine, now gone though. We had the boys 15+ years, which is pretty good. We found them along the side of the interstate, abandoned at about 5 months. They're lab/chow mix and they were fierce looking but incredibly sweet dogs. I miss them. The English Pointer is my Daisy girl. We also rescued her, from an abusive home. We lost her a year after the boys. I have no idea how old she was. None of them ever cooperated one whit with picture taking!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)but I think these are great pics of them. They are all adorable and very photogenic! I just love dogs so much!

(5,210 posts)We went on to rescue and rehome 23 dogs (nd a couple of cats) over the next several years who were abandoned on just our rural road. My vet finally started giving me a discount on the rescues, bless him. We'd get them vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and then once I knew what breed / mix they were, and a little about their personalities from spending time with them and doing a little obedience training, I'd run a free classified. I always had more takers than I had dogs. I really loved doing that. Each one still has a place in my heart.
Leghorn21
(13,520 posts)cash, eh? Yes, all blessings to your kindly vet! - - and how great it is that you got them spayed/neutered/vaccinated and TRAINED a bit before placing them in their lucky forever homes!!
Again: well done!!

(63,221 posts)We grew up with beagles. I just loved them! They were so affectionate and loving. My sister and I used to sneak our beagle up in to one of our beds and hide her under the covers (my mother didn't want her in the house at night). We told her we were sleeping together because we were scared and she would say "I hope that dog isn't in here!" and it was like the dog knew to keep still and quiet or she (the dog) would get busted. In the morning we would let her out and nobody would be the wiser.

(4,159 posts)To be honest, we're not the best home for a pair of hounds. My wife and I are getting up there in years, and these are STRONG dogs, and stubborn. But both of our hounds are older females who didn't have many options and we're suckers for a hard-luck story. So we've paid for them to be spayed, for surgery on the Bl&tan's tumors, and we've adjusted to their quirks and neurosis that come from a lifetime of abuse and neglect.
Despite their history, they're really sweet dogs. Which is truly amazing.
paleotn
(17,778 posts)They're so hard to find homes for. I've found that shelter dogs seem to really appreciate what we do for them. They are strong, rambunctious and stubborn, particularly when young, but like most dogs, they calm down considerably as they grow older. Our main issue is they want to chase virtually everything that looks like prey....squirrels, ground hogs, rabbits, deer....they'll go bananas in their fenced area over just squirrels. They're bred hunters so that's to be expected. And they love to dig. Ugh!
They seem to bond very readily and truly love their people. They're good people dogs in general. Our English has never met a stranger. A real pat pig. Our Walker was abused, hates gunfire and fireworks and is shy, but still a sweet boy.
Boomer
(4,159 posts)They've destroyed our backyard, which was my wife's pride and joy. It now resembles a moonscape.
keep a rake and shovel handy....and a towel to wipe off dirty noses. I've yet to figure out a way to make them stop, so they have their run, which looks like a construction site. The rest is off limits. Their general wackiness and those soft, brown eyes make up for it though.

(4,159 posts)And she uses it, too.
Sallie is a rescue from a very abusive situation, a hoarder who chained up ten hounds and basically starved them. One of the group died before they were rescued and I've seen photos of some of them just after rescue. They look like they walked out of Dachau.
Not surprisingly, Sallie has food issues. She's not food-aggressive, she's just food-obsessed (can't blame her). The first few weeks in the house she Hoovered her way from one room to another. If you turned your back for a minute she was trying to swallow or chew just about anything that she considered to be food. And her definition was pretty broad.
The first day in the house, she startled one of our (rescue) cats and he swatted at her. She darteed away into another part of the house, and before I could catch up, she had found the cat food dispenser up on a shelf. I dragged her away from it by the collar, turned to clean up the spillage, and she was off to the kitchen. I was right behind her, but she headed straight for a kitchen counter and sucked down about a half tub of margarine before I caught her.
Over the past three months that we've had her, she's settled down a bit, but food still gets her rapt attention. She snagged a bagel off my plate just a few days ago, when I looked away for a second.
Leghorn21
(13,520 posts)unimaginable deprivations, but praise be to all appropriate gods, she has ended up with an understanding family who gets her obsession with FOOD FOOD FOOD and doesnt punish her for it!
I for one hope she enjoyed your bagel!! (gone in sixty seconds, amirite?) - but so glad to hear shes settling down a bit...three months isnt very long, in the course of things, and I bet she mellows out more and more as the months pass, eh? Poor lil Sallie!
You are a fine, fine guardian, Boomer, and a really great writer to boot!! Many thanks for this account, and please give lil Sallie a scritch behind the ears for me!!

Photobucket just turned into a great big ad assault though. I uploaded my two pictures there just now and it was really irritating. Maybe there is a better way.
Wherever you upload them try and get the "image location" that has .jpg on the end of the url. A picture always shows up if you get the link with the .jpg on the end.

(63,221 posts)There are four types of Swiss Mountain dogs in order of size: the Greater Swiss, Bernese, Appenzeller and Entlebucher. All have the same basic coloring but differ in size. They are all short haired except for the Berner.
Roxi is not a shy dog, but she is not aggressive either. She has a lovely temperament and is as sweet as can be. She's very affectionate and loving - she is a definite people dog.

(16,817 posts)Warning...never ever fall in love with a greyhound. The first pic is Mr Dylan, our smexy baby boy. Then two weeks ago we were asked to foster an older greyhound whos family had to surrender her. The organization ask us to foster her because Millie had been particularly attached to a young boy in the house and they knew our son was a similar age. Yeah that fostering crap lasted less than a day because she immediately bonded with our family. So we made it official today by adding Mrs Millie to the fam!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)That is so good of you to foster/adopt Greyhounds. They need good homes - especially if they had been racing dogs.
Docreed2003
(16,817 posts)Our magestic boy won several races early on...but our newest addition was the star of the track! Sadly, that is one of the reasons she was brought into our adoption network. She was so fast and so talented that she was bred way more than she should have and was literally dying from milk fever when she was rescued. Its funny..Dylan runs all the time in the back yard, but Ive only seen Millie full on race run once, and it was like this moment where she looked at him and was all Dont mess with this, it was too funny.
We have all of Dylans race records, including his racing flag which weve framed...and were in the process of doing the same for Millie!

This was my Borzoi, Jazzmin, playing with Layla, my crossbred Borzoi/Great Pyrenees. Both died of cancer, a few years apart.

German shepherd/English mastiff cross in his post-surgery t-shirt last year. He had a benign growth removed from his "elbow" joint on his front right leg. It took a long time to heal because of the location but he's seen panting in the bottom image after a nice long walk after recovering from that surgery.
We love this guy!
