A question regarding stolen cars

I keep hearing on the news that Albuquerque is #1 in the country for stolen cars.

I also hear too frequently about people who leave their cars 'warming up' in the driveway
key in the ignition,
motor running,
car unlocked --- while they go back inside for
just one more cup of coffee,
to go to the bathroom,
to kiss the pets goodbye ....

... and come outside
SHOCKED
to find their car stolen.

Does their insurance pay out in that case,
or does the insurance company say
"You stupid fool !"

???????????????????????????

Many legitimate insurance claims involve some degree of carelessness or mistake or accident involving the owner/beneficiary.

Fire insurance pays if you accidentally place your incense candles too close to your drapes.

Hell, most life insurance pays for suicide (other than in the first two years of the policy).

Now, if you put a sign on the dashboard saying “steal me, I need the insurance money”, that’s another story....

Yeah. The Diesel.

I used to park in downtown with the doors unlocked and the keys in it.

OK, Seattle is a pretty honest place. But it was always still there when I came back.

Is a manual transmission. So many stories of stolen cars abandoned in a block or two because the thief can't drive it.

You get a ticket if your car is stolen and the keys were left in it, doesn’t matter whether it was running or not.
When we had a long cold spell recently this fact was publicized. Led to one guy getting in big trouble for claiming that he had been carjacked, but his neighbor’s security camera showed a couple of teenagers jumping in the car that was running in his driveway.

... if you use that feature.

Obviously there wouldn't be keys involved and the feature has anti theft safeguards.

Years ago there was a murder case here in the south suburbs of Chicago - Masters? There was a made for TV movie with Treat Williams and Brian Denehy. Anyway, the cops were dredging the local lake and canal and found a bunch of "stolen" cars with keys in the ignitions. Cars that were supposedly stolen out of driveways and parking lots with no keys in the ignition. I remember the cops saying there was some explaining to do.

The lake was notorious for being a good place to "lose" a car.
