My feral cats are now officially 'snowflakes'.

I bought 6 outdoor heated kitty houses, one for each cat. The have a pad in the floor of each house that is kind of like a heating pad, except that they are activated by the pressure of a cat sitting on it. If I recall correctly, the literature said the pads will heat up to about 100 degrees. When the cat leaves the house, the pad turns itself off.

I live in New Orleans, so for most of the winter, the cats would probably be fine sleeping on regular pet beds inside the garage, where they are out of the wind and rain.

I leave the houses plugged in inside my garage 24 hours a day. At first the cats were mostly using the houses on really cold nights (in New Orleans, a really cold night is one in which the temperature gets below 40).

Now I find them lounging in them at all hours, even on nice days.

Bunch of damn snowflakes!

they're happy. I knew someone who bought her indoor cat a heated bed and the cat never left it, even during the summer, except to eat and use the litter box.

"Way too hot, mama"! They don't mind snow, except in the pads of their toes.

Only two, though. The rest of the ferals have to tough it out with the cheapo houses insulated with straw.

One has taken to yawing at me and coming in to eat the indoor cats' food. On bad nights he hangs out in the spare room.

It gets below zero here. We taught them to come inside to eat during the summer and they moved in when the weather got cold. Still won’t socialize, though.
